Mudita – Sympathetic Joy Meditation

We can consciously develop our positive mental qualities through these meditation techniques. Mudita means Sympathetic Joy or rejoicing at others happiness and prosperity. It is a meditation technique that counters habitual feelings of jealousy or envy by reconditioning our thinking patterns so that we feel happy in our heart at other peoples success.

Mudita – Sympathetic Joy has the feeling of lifting up and supporting the other person. It is the direct opposite to jealousy and envy which have the feeling of wanting to at the very least ignore another’s good fortune and at worst wanting to sabotage them in some way that that they will lose it. These feelings destroy us slowly from the inside and this meditation technique can be used to weaken or remove these negative patterns making us feel lighter in our own hearts. This is because only one thinking pattern can exist at any moment, we can’t wish for someone’s loss and be happy for their gain at the same time, taking advantage of this we can replace a negative pattern of thought with a positive one.

Sympathetic Joy is closely related to gratefulness, humility, friendliness and loyalty.

Mudita – Sympathetic Joy Meditation

In this meditation you rejoice in anothers success and send your wish that they continue to succeed in this order :

1.Someone you respect/ admire, 2. Someone very close to you, 3. A Person you feel Neutral to, 4. A difficult person in your life, 5. All beings

Remember to develop an open heart means to open it to everyone and eventually have no enemies, only loved ones.

Take a comfortable sitting posture that you can stay in without moving for the desired length of your meditation. Close your eyes and take a deep breath then breathe out letting all thoughts and tension drop away. Slowly scan from the top of your head to your feet and release any knots and tensions you come across by breathing into them.

Make a half smile on your face, relax once more and picture yourself sitting there smiling with either a thought or image.

Now slowly and gently repeat as thoughts in your mind:

”May you always meet with success”
“May you keep any good fortune you have attained”
“May your life be full of happiness and peace”

Keep gently repeating these phrases to yourself softly, first sending it to someone you respect or admire, in no hurry and really mean it. The key here is to develop the feeling of caring that comes with saying these phrases. Once the feeling has developed keep sending it to the person you respect or admire and when you are ready you can start sending to the next person you have chosen.

Picture them in your mind then gently say

”May you always meet with success”
“May you keep any good fortune you have attained”
“May your life be full of happiness and peace”

Once you have moved through all the people you have chosen then send your thoughts of caring out into your neighbourhood, suburb, city, state, country and keep increasing the range

”May everyone always meet with success”
“May they keep any good fortune they have attained”
“May their life be full of happiness and peace”
